Is this Cicero’s original Latin?
No. The filler contains recognizable fragments associated with sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, but it changes and rearranges the source. Calling the filler “the complete original text from Cicero” conflates two different texts.
| Text | Purpose | Language status |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Lorem Ipsum | Visual placeholder for layouts | Altered fragments; not coherent continuous Latin |
| Cicero, De finibus 1.10.32–33 | Philosophical argument about pleasure and pain | Classical Latin with published translations |
Read the Latin beside H. Rackham’s public-domain English version in the University of Chicago edition. Our translation guide explains why “Lorem ipsum means pain itself” is incomplete.
Which length should you use?
- One paragraph for a card, modal, or short content block.
- Three paragraphs for an article preview or medium panel.
- Five paragraphs for a page section or scrolling test.
