History of Lorem Ipsum
Last updated: February 2026
Lorem Ipsum was first used as placeholder text in the 1500s, when an unknown typographer scrambled passages from Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC) to create a type specimen book. It has been the standard filler text for over 500 years — surviving hand-set metal type, phototypesetting, and the digital revolution. In 1982, Latin professor Richard McClintock traced it back to its classical source, proving it was corrupted Latin, not random gibberish. Here is the full story.
Timeline
- 45 BC — Cicero Writes de Finibus The Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero writes de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a five-book treatise exploring competing theories of ethics. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 contain the original Latin passages that would later become Lorem Ipsum. The text discusses whether the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain are the highest moral goods — an Epicurean argument that Cicero ultimately rejects.
- 1500s — The First Scrambled Version An unknown typographer takes Cicero's text and scrambles it to create a type specimen book — a sample booklet used to demonstrate typefaces to customers. Words are altered, removed, and rearranged so the text is no longer readable Latin, but retains the look and feel of real language. This is the earliest known use of Lorem Ipsum as filler text. The exact date and printer are unknown.
- 1960s — Letraset Spreads Lorem Ipsum Letraset, a British company producing dry-transfer lettering sheets, includes Lorem Ipsum passages in its product catalog. Graphic designers worldwide use Letraset sheets to lay out text in mockups, and Lorem Ipsum becomes the de facto standard filler text across the design industry. Before digital tools existed, designers would physically rub Letraset letters onto layouts — and the Lorem Ipsum sheets were among the most popular.
- 1982 — Richard McClintock Identifies the Source Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, traces Lorem Ipsum back to Cicero's de Finibus. By looking up the unusual Latin word "consectetur," which only appears in a few classical texts, he identifies the exact source. This disproves the common belief that Lorem Ipsum was random gibberish — it was corrupted classical Latin all along.
- 1985 — Aldus PageMaker Goes Digital Aldus Corporation releases PageMaker, one of the first desktop publishing programs. It includes Lorem Ipsum as a built-in placeholder text option. This is the moment Lorem Ipsum transitions from the physical typesetting world to the digital era. Millions of designers encounter it for the first time on their Macintosh computers.
- 1990s — The Web Era As the World Wide Web grows, web designers adopt Lorem Ipsum for HTML mockups and page templates. The first online Lorem Ipsum generators appear, including lipsum.com (founded in the late 1990s), which becomes the most visited Lorem Ipsum site on the internet. The text becomes inseparable from web design workflows.
- 2000s — Built Into Every Tool Lorem Ipsum becomes a standard feature in design and development tools. Adobe InDesign adds "Fill with Placeholder Text," WordPress themes ship with Lorem Ipsum in demo content, and browser developer tools use it for testing. Alternative generators emerge — Hipster Ipsum, Bacon Ipsum, Cupcake Ipsum — but the classic Latin version remains dominant.
- 2010s — Figma, Sketch & Modern Design Modern design tools like Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD include native Lorem Ipsum generation. Figma's "Type > Fill with placeholder text" command becomes one of the most-used features. The text is now so embedded in the design industry that most designers use it without knowing its origin.
- Today — Still the Standard Over 2,000 years after Cicero wrote the original passage and over 500 years after it was first used as filler text, Lorem Ipsum remains the global standard for placeholder text. It appears in design mockups, code templates, CMS demos, and UI prototypes across every industry and language. No serious competitor has displaced it.
Why Has Lorem Ipsum Lasted So Long?
Several factors explain Lorem Ipsum's remarkable longevity:
- It looks like real text — The character frequency and word lengths closely match English and other European languages, so layouts look realistic
- It is language-neutral — Because it is not readable in any living language, it works for designers in every country
- It is tool-embedded — Every major design tool includes it, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of adoption
- It is universally recognized — When a client or developer sees Lorem Ipsum, they immediately know it is placeholder text that needs to be replaced
- Alternatives never stuck — Fun alternatives like Bacon Ipsum or Hipster Ipsum are entertaining but impractical for professional work because they distract from the design
About Cicero
Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) was a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer, and philosopher. He is considered one of the greatest prose writers in the Latin language. His works on rhetoric, philosophy, and politics were hugely influential during the Renaissance and remain studied today.
De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum was written during a period of political turmoil in Rome. Cicero, briefly retired from public life, turned to philosophy and produced several major works in rapid succession. The irony of his ethical treatise becoming the world's most widely reproduced meaningless text would likely have amused him — he was known for his wit.
